High School Roundup: Huntington Beach softball extends winning streak to seven games

Sophia Knight had three hits and drove in a run to help the Huntington Beach High School softball team to a 4-3 win over visiting Orange Lutheran on Saturday in a nonleague game.

Devyn Greer also had two hits and a run batted in for Huntington Beach (16-1), which scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for its seventh consecutive win.

Jaylene Duarte also had a hit, an RBI and a run scored for the Oilers.

Huntington Beach 6, Newport Harbor 2: Sophia Knight had four hits to lead Huntington Beach on Friday in a Sunset Conference crossover game.

Emma Francisco allowed two runs on eight hits and four walks in a complete game for the Oilers. Francisco also struck out five batters, adding a home run offensively.

Jaylene Duarte also had a base hit and two runs batted in for Huntington Beach.

Lindsey Blanchfield went three for four for Newport Harbor (8-4). Eliana Gottlieb and Kendall Kelly each had two hits and drove in a run, and Lily Larkins had a double.

Edison 5, Fountain Valley 3: Isabella Espinoza had two hits and two runs batted in to lead the Chargers on Friday in a Sunset Conference crossover game at home.

Jenna Gorden had three hits and drove in a run for Edison (5-7). Kaitlyn Reynolds earned the win, allowing four hits and striking out five over 5 1/3 innings pitched.

Fountain Valley is now 3-10 overall.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Newport Harbor 62, Mission Viejo 21: Chase Dionio paced the host Sailors with 16 points to go with four rebounds and two steals in Friday’s nonleague game.

Cydney Jover added 14 points, five steals and three assists for Newport Harbor (8-2). Emma Fults had six points, eight rebounds, seven assists and two blocked shots and Emma Coatsworth chipped in with seven points and six rebounds.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Laguna Beach 57, Newport Harbor 51: Nolan Naess scored 30 points to lead the Breakers on Friday in a Surf League game at home.

Jackson Sirianni and Kanoa Panganiban each scored eight points, Willie Rounaghi added seven points and Chase Hall chipped in with four points for Laguna Beach (10-0, 2-0).

Newport Harbor dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in league.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor 3, Edison 0: Kyle McKibben had a team-high nine kills for the visiting Sailors in their 25-15, 25-19, 25-18 win on Saturday in a Sunset Conference crossover match.

Jake Read had six kills and eight service aces, and Brendan Read added eight kills for Newport Harbor (9-3).

Edison fell to 3-5 overall.

Corona del Mar 3, Los Alamitos 0: Vanis Buchholz had nine kills and five blocks to lead the Sea Kings to a 25-16, 32-30, 25-20 victory on Saturday in a Sunset Conference crossover match on the road.

Luke Chandler had nine kills and Sterling Foley added eight kills for CdM (7-1).

BOYS’ GOLF

Corona del Mar 162, Marina 191: Calder Overfelt was the medalist with a seven-under-par 28 for the Sea Kings on Friday in a Sunset Conference crossover match at Willowick Golf Course.

John Tipton (-4), Peter Hu (-2), Heman Liang (-1), Justin Huang (+1) and Ryan Davis (+1) were the other starters for CdM, which improved to 10-3 overall.

Marina is now 1-6 on the season.
