High School Roundup: Sea Kings on to CIF

IRVINE — Seven Corona del Mar High wrestlers qualified for the CIF Southern Section Southern Division individual tournament after helping the Sea Kings to a third-place finish at the Pacific Coast League championships at Irvine High on Saturday.

Five CdM wrestlers reached the final in their weight class, starting with seniors Hunter Thomas (130 pounds), Chad Caraway (152) and Nick Delgado (189), as well as juniors Kiefer Cohen (125) and Cody Forrest (215). They all placed second. Delgado, the No 1 seed, forfeited his final match because of a shoulder injury.

Sea Kings sophomores Andrew Minkus (112) and Mitch Lund (160) finished third and also qualified for the CIF Southern Division individual tournament on Feb. 18-19 at Brea Olinda High.

Sophomore Lance Seger (145) and freshman Chris Crozton (103) finished fourth for CdM, for which Jensen Reinhart, though top-seeded in his weight class, was unable to compete due to an injury.

Irvine won the team title with 172 points, followed by Woodbridge (166) and CdM (103.5).

SANTA ANA — The Eagles clinched the outright Orange Coast League title behind 15 points from senior Yesenia Maldonado and 14 apiece from Kassie Stratton and Celia Duran.

It was the 11th straight win for the Eagles (19-6, 9-0 in league), ranked No. 11 in CIF Southern Section Division IV-A.

The Eagles visit Costa Mesa on Wednesday.
