UC Irvine 7, San Diego State (10 innings)

SAN DIEGO — An error that led to an unearned run in the ninth inning cost senior Brian Hernandez his first collegiate save, but the Anteaters scored four in the 10th to give Hernandez his first collegiate win in nonconference action Tuesday.

Junior Jordan Fox paced a nine-hit attack for the visitors (4-0), going two for five.

Tommy Reyes drove in two runs, while Hernandez, Drew Hillman and Ronnie Shaeffer added single RBIs for the winners.

Freshman Andrew Thurman worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs in his first career start.

Nick Hoover, Andy Lines, Jimmy Litchfield and Matt Whitehouse combined on 3 2/3 scoreless relief innings.

Six UCI runs were unearned.

San Diego State is 1-3.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Hawaii

IRVINE — The host Anteaters rallied from a 22-15 deficit in Game 3 to key a 27-25, 20-25, 25-23, 28-26, win in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Tuesday.

Junior opposite Carson Clark led the No. 7-ranked winners (10-8, 7-5 in conference) with 20 kills, while senior outside hitter Jordan DuFault chipped in 18 kills and four of his team’s 13 aces.

Middle blocker Kevin Carroll also had four aces, while senior setter Anthony Spittle had a season-high 63 assists.

Freshman middle blocker Scott Kevorken hit .700, going errorless with seven kills on 10 swings. He added two aces.

Senior outside hitter Corey Yoder had 11 kills and senior middle Kevin Wynne had six kills on six attempts in the final two sets.

No. 10-ranked Hawaii is 6-9, 4-6.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 70, San Diego Christian 39

EL CAJON — Senior Molly Pfohl scored a game-high 21 points to go with eight rebounds for the visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Tuesday.

Chelsea Alfafara had 14 points and seven rebounds, while Leigha Bednar and Sarah Boyd had 10 points each for Vanguard (16-9, 12-7 in conference). Boyd also had eight assists and five rebounds.

San Diego Christian is 8-19, 3-16.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

San Diego Christian 83, Vanguard 77 (OT)

EL CAJON — Chris Pynch hit a three-pointer for the visiting Lions with 18 seconds left in regulation to force overtime in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Tuesday.

Chris Raybon had 16 points and Billal Azizi added 14 for Vanguard (7-20, 4-15 in conference), which led, 77-76, with 1:33 left in overtime.

San Diego Christian is 8-21, 2-17.

Orange Coast 6, Irvine Valley 3

IRVINE — No. 2 singles player Jesse Chen was one of four Pirates who won in singles in the Orange Empire Conference opener Tuesday.

Felix Demiro, Gregory Villicana and Aaron Lester (Nos. 4-6, respectively), also won singles sets for visiting OCC (4-2, 1-0 in conference).

Westmont 6, Vanguard 3

COSTA MESA — Sandro Bucher and Alexandre Piccin won at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, for the No. 7-ranked Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Tuesday.

No. 8-ranked Westmont is 1-2, 1-1 in conference.

Vanguard is 2-2, 1-1.

COSTA MESA — Remi Sutton grabbed the host Pirates’ lone win at No. 6 singles in the Orange Empire Conference opener Tuesday.
