Paddle out for Chuck Allen is Sunday

A beach memorial and paddle out will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier for National Scholastic Surfing Assn. (NSSA) co-founder and United States Amateur Snowboarding Assn. (USASA) founder Chuck Allen, 74, who died Feb. 14.

Allen helped established the NSSA in 1978 and 10 years later founded the USASA. In 1984, he coached the USA Surf Team to a gold medal at the World Championships in Huntington Beach. The paddle out ceremony is hosted by the NSSA. For more information, visit


Hurricanes, Runnin' Rebels net NJB wins

A pair of Huntington Beach National Junior Basketball Division 2 boys' teams — the Hurricanes and Runnin' Rebels— recorded two victories in the league's Championship Series.

The Hurricanes on Saturday scored a 43-37 victory over host Fountain Valley. On Sunday, they took on Tustin at Westminster High and posted a 62-43 win.

The Runnin' Rebels recorded wins over the Westminster Lions (46-45) and Tustin Team USA (37-24).

In Division 1, the Huntington Beach Rockets were edged, 53-51, by La Mirada.


Barons golf tournament fundraiser set

The sixth annual Baron Football "Moose Invitational" Golf Tournament is June 27at Mile Square Golf Course in Fountain Valley. The tournament consists of a four-person scramble, longest drive contest, closest-to-the-pin contest and putting contest.

The cost is $150 per player and covers green fees, cart fees, practice range, door prizes, gift bags, lunch and dinner. The tournament benefits the Fountain Valley High football program and the Michael Musso Memorial Fund.

Musso, a 2004 graduate of Fountain Valley, lost his life in a car accident in July, 2005. Through the golf fundraiser, a scholarship is awarded each year to a four-year Baron football player. Online registration and prize donation information can be found at
