Jim Scott memorial on Friday

Share

A memorial for the late Jim Scott, a passionate Costa Mesa schools booster, will be held at the Estancia High boys’ gym Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Scott, who led projects that included a new football stadium at Estancia High, died of heart failure on May 14. He was 85.

Estancia’s football stadium is named after him.

He was highly instrumental in getting facilities constructed at Costa Mesa and Estancia high schools. He led efforts to gather support in the community and generate funds. Jim Scott Stadium was built in 2008 and a new pool at Costa Mesa High was completed last school year.

Scott and his family established the Battle for the Bell series, the games between Estancia and Costa Mesa in football, boys’ and girls’ basketball and baseball. The series’ winners are treated to a free dinner at Newport Rib Company.

“The Scott family has helped create many memories,” said Costa Mesa High Principal Phil D’Agostino, also a former Estancia principal. “We’re always going to be grateful for the type of selflessness he exuded toward our schools and our community.”

This year’s Battle for the Bell will take place at Jim Scott Stadium Friday at 7 p.m. Estancia and Costa Mesa will play for the Orange Coast League title, as both enter undefeated in league.

It was Scott’s wish to have a celebration of his life prior to the bell football game.
