Briefs: Schmidt shines

Michael Schmidt helped the Costa Mesa Middle School skateboarding team win the National Scholastic Skateboarding League contest Feb. 10 at Quiksilver’s Door 33 warehouse in Huntington Beach.

Schmidt finished first in the middle school street competition and second in the bowl division.

Sarah Thompson took third in the high school bowl division for Costa Mesa High.

Huntington Beach won the High School Combined contest.

Lavery makes cut

BOGOTA, Colombia —- UC Irvine alumnus Mike Lavery shot par 71 in Friday’s second round of the Nationwide Tour’s Pacific Rubiales Colombia Championship to make the cut.

Lavery, who is in 17th place, has a 36-hole total of three-under-par 139, seven shots off the lead.

John Chin, another Anteater alum, shot 71 Friday but missed the cut by four strokes with a 147 total.

Estancia alumni game Saturday

The Estancia High baseball program will have its alumni game Saturday.

Registration and batting practice is from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at theshool. The almuni game will take place afterward, alumni vs. alumni. Then at 1 p.m. the alumni will take on this season’s team.

The alumni game will feature Jeff Gardner, who played Major League Baseball.

Alumni interested in playing can show up on Saturday.
