Rivera leaves no doubt

Cerissa Rivera was in top form and the Fountain Valley High softball team continued to add to its impressive start by scoring a 4-0 nonleague victory Tuesday at Ocean View.

Rivera recorded a no-hitter in a complete-game performance. The senior struck out 10 and allowed just one walk to Tobi Salzman in the third inning in running her record to 7-3.

Fountain Valley scored all of its runs in the top of the second inning. Seahawks relief pitcher Brittany Hitchcock entered in the third inning and held the Barons scoreless the rest of the way.

“I would have liked to see more hitting from us, but overall I was pleased with the win,” second-year Fountain Valley Coach Rick Aldrich said. “Cerissa sure threw a great game. We’ll be leaning on her a lot this season.”

Rivera also had a hit and run batted in. Khailey Campos doubled in the second inning and scored a run, Brenda Bott doubled in the third, had an RBI, scored a run and walked, Madi Perez doubled in the second inning and picked up an RBI and also scored, and Amanda Nickel had a hit, RBI and scored once.

Fountain Valley, which improved to 9-3, tunes up for the start to next week’s Sunset League race by hosting Orange Lutheran in a nonleague doubleheader Saturday. The first game starts at 10 a.m..

The Lancers are ranked second in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

“It’ll be a great test for us,” Aldrich said. “It’s the kind of game that will help us get ready for league play.”

On Tuesday, Fountain Valley opens Sunset League play with a 3:15 p.m. game at Edison.

Edison

The Chargers (10-2), ranked ninth in CIF Division 1, finished in fifth place at the Faster 2 First Tournament at Torrance High on Saturday after routing Mountain Ridge (Arizona), 10-1. Also on Saturday, they blanked El Modena, 2-0. A day earlier, they shut out Damonte Ranch (Nevada), 10-0, on Friday.

In Saturday’s win over Mountain Ridge, Casey Africano went three for three with a home run and three RBIs, Madison Hickman went four for four with a double and two RBIs and Karley Wester and Nicole Zapotoczny both had two hits. Sammy Cordova (5-2) got the win.

Against El Modena, both Jessica Plaza and Ali Wester had two hits and Hickman picked up an RBI. Cordova was the winning pitcher. In Friday’s win over Damonte Ranch, Ali Wester went three for three, Africano two for three with a double, Plaza and Mercedes O’Connor both doubled and singled, and Karley Wester had two hits and scored three runs.

Junior Sammy Cordova (9-2) was the winning pitcher in all three games.

Edison begins its Sunset League schedule on Tuesday with a 3:15 p.m. home game against Newport Harbor.

Huntington Beach

The Oilers won two games Saturday at the Northwood Tournament. Their first triumph was an 8-3 decision over Irvine. Their second, a 7-5 win over Warren of Downey.

In the win against Irvine, Justice Walker had three hits, including a home run, Sammie Vandiver also had three hits and Emily Stoner had two hits. Sophomore Micalea Vierra went the distance with five strikeouts for the win

In the win over Warren, Stoner threw 6 2/3 innings to pick up the win.

Huntington (10-4) takes on Esperanza at 10 a.m. Saturday in a tournament semifinal game at Bill Barber Park in Irvine. They Oilers launch their bid for a Sunset League title Tuesday when they host Fountain Valley in a 3:15 p.m. league opener.

Marina

The Vikings, 8-1 and ranked fourth in CIF Southern Section Division 1, are idle this week. They start their Sunset League schedule Tuesday by hosting Los Alamitos at 3:15 p.m.
