Edison renews rivalry against Mater Dei

The fifth week of the 2012 prep football season has three local teams closing out the nonleague portion of their respective schedules.

The highlight of the week is arguably the Mater Dei-Edison showdown.

“It’s a big one, for sure,” Edison Coach Dave White said. “Any time you play Mater Dei, it’s special. It should be a good game.”

In the previous 13 games between the schools, Mater Dei owns an 8-5 series edge.

Friday

Mater Dei (3-0) vs. Edison (3-0), 7 p.m., Orange Coast College: The Monarchs and Chargers put their undefeated seasons on the line when the teams meet for the 13th consecutive year.

Mater Dei, ranked fifth in the CIF Southern Section Pac-5 Division, has been rolling on offense. The Monarchs come in averaging 44 points per game, and are coming off a 51-0 victory against Santa Monica. Quarterback Ryan McMahon has thrown for 369 yards and five touchdowns, and the Monarchs’ ground game is led by Justin Allen, who has 234 yards and averages nearly seven yards per rush.

The Monarchs’ defense also has been formidable, giving up just 23 points in three games.

“They are putting up 40 pints a game, their defense is flying around, and they are tough,” White said. “This is our toughest game yet, and we will have to play with more consistency if we want to be successful Friday.”

Edison, the new No. 1 team in the Southwest Division, blanked Servite, 6-0, last week. Elijah Herrera rushed for 119 yards and scored the game’s lone touchdown in the third quarter. Donald Rice also racked up 119 rushing yards.

The Chargers’ defense didn’t allow the Friars to penetrate beyond the Edison 35-yard line the entire game.

“I thought we outplayed (Servite) all game,” White said. “Our first team-defense has played real well for three weeks in a row. We got our run game going and it’s the first time, in a long time, that we’ve had two running backs go over 100 yards in the same game. Offensively, though, we still need to be more consistent.”

Brethren Christian (3-0) vs. St. Anthony (3-1), 7 p.m., St. Anthony High: Brethren Christian returns to the playing field with a road game against a St. Anthony team that is on a three-game win streak.

BC had a bye week last week. The Warriors have scored three lopsided victories to start the season. In those three wins, junior quarterback Jack McInally has completed 42 of 67 passes (62%) for 762 yards with 18 touchdowns and just one interception. The Warriors have a solid receiving corps, led by Guy Demazeliere (eight TDs), Austin Gorrell (five TDs), Brandon Bryson (four TDs) and Anthony Moore (three TDs).

“We are blessed with a great group of receivers,” BC Coach Pat McInally said. “Our O-line is providing excellent protection and the running backs are picking up blitzers and running well when they get the ball. Offensive coordinator Ryan O’Hara’s schemes are very advanced, and his play-calling has been uncanny.”

First-year Coach Mario Morales has St. Anthony on a three-game roll following a season-opening defeat to Winward. The Saints have defeated Crean Lutheran (33-12), Fairmont Prep (40-0) and Mary Star of the Sea (21-15) over the last three weeks.

“They’re very athletic and will present a big challenge for us both defensively and offensively,” Pat McInally said. “This will be a real test for our team. It’ll take our best effort of the season to win it.”

Fountain Valley (3-1) vs. Trabuco Hills (3-1), 7 p.m., Trabuco Hills High: Fountain Valley concludes nonleague play with a tough road assignment at Trabuco Hills.

The Barons won their third straight game Friday by taking down Downey, 24-10. Chris d’Entremont threw two touchdown passes to Jason Baker and one to Jacob Church.

Sal Ochoa came up with two big defensive plays in the first half for the Barons. He recovered a fumble in the opening quarter, then intercepted a pass in the second quarter to set up the Barons’ second score.

Fountain Valley had built its lead to 24-0 midway through the third quarter.

“Our defense did a real nice job of shutting (Downey) down there at the end,” Fountain Valley Coach John Shipp said. “They had several chances to get back into the game, but our guys came up big.”

The Barons take on a Trabuco Hills squad whose only loss is to undefeated Santa Margarita, the top-ranked team in the Pac-5 Division. The Mustangs last week defeated Huntington Beach, 35-14. Quarterback Nathan Perry threw for 193 yards and scored twice to lead the way.

Fountain Valley is the third Sunset League team Trabuco Hills will face in nonleague play. In addition to last week’s win against Huntington, the Mustangs defeated Newport Harbor, 27-21, on Aug. 30.

“They are a well-balanced team,” Shipp said of the Mustangs. “It will be another tough test for us before we head into league.”

Westminster (1-2) vs. Huntington Beach (1-3), 7 p.m., Huntington Beach High: It’s Homecoming for the Oilers, who also end their nonleague schedule when they host the Lions.

Huntington is looking to rebound for last week’s 35-14 loss at Trabuco Hills. Junior quarterback Kai Ross threw touchdown passes to receivers Mario Valenzuela and Nathan Thompson and finished with 223 yards of total offense. Both Valenzuela, a senior who finished with 114 yards receiving, and Thompson, a sophomore coming off a hip injury, scored their first touchdowns at the varsity level.

“Mario and Nathan both had nice games,” Huntington Coach Eric Lo said. “Trabuco played harder, and was more physical, than we were. We’ve got to be able to run the ball better, and make plays on third down. That’s what we have been struggling with.”

Westminster got its first win of the season last week, rallying from a 10-0 halftime deficit to earn a 13-10 home win over Don Bosco Tech. Nathan Juarez rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown for the Lions.

“Anytime you play Westminster, you can expect them to be tough and very physical, and that’s a concern for us,” Lo said. “It’s homecoming for us, and we can’t let that be a distraction.”

Sherman Oaks CES (0-4) vs. Marina (2-2), 7 p.m., Westminster High: Marina is the third local team to complete nonleague play Friday, doing so against a winless Sherman Oaks CES team.

The Vikings last week had a two-game win streak snapped at San Juan Hills, 28-7. The lone Marina score came on a touchdown run by junior James Myers, who led the Vikings ground game with 59 yards on 10 carries.

“Our special teams cost us a chance to win the game,” Marina Coach George Pascoe said. “A punt blocked for a TD, then (had) one returned for a TD.”

Sherman Oaks CES has scored 27 points in four games. One key player for the Knights, who are coming off a 59-7 loss to North Hollywood, is linebacker/tight end Chris Ferman.

“The Knights are having a tough season so far,” Pascoe said. “We have to make sure they don’t ‘find’ themselves against us. We need to play better on both sides of the ball.”

Bolsa Grande (1-2) vs. Ocean View (1-2), 7 p.m., Ocean View High: Ocean View, which registered its first victory of the season last week, and the first in Luis Nunez’s head coaching tenure at the school, looks to make it two straight when it takes on Bolsa Grande.

The Seahawks smothered Cerritos, 49-0, last week. Senior running back Nate Kwon racked up 177 yards on 16 carries and scored twice, senior running back Garrett Hoffman ran for two scores, and senior quarterback Dallas Borge was seven of eight for 103 yards and a touchdown.

Running backs Zeddie Morgan and Kevin Tierney also rushed for touchdowns.

“Great team win, as we got everybody that suited up on the field,” said Nunez, who is in his first year as head coach. “The kids were focused and hungry all week to get our first win of the year. We were able to put five different running backs in the end zone, (the) line played physical, and defense swarmed to the ball all night.”

“The kids are excited to get back to work and prepare for Bolsa Grande, as we are working to get better each week to get ready for league.”

Bolsa Grande is coming off a 36-33 loss to Century. Joshua Borbon threw for 170 yards and Jarrod Feuer rushed for 112 yards for the Matadors.

Nunez said that starting tailback Daniel Valencia, who has been sidelined with an injury since the start of the season, “should be cleared” to play this week.
