Girls’ Volleyball: CdM sweeps Barackman, Bears

CORONA DEL MAR — The coach for the Temecula Valley High girls’ volleyball team has a last name similar to the President of the United States: Kelly Barackman.

But that’s about the only thing she had close to being in common with President Barack Obama on Tuesday night.

Barackman and her Golden Bears didn’t stand a chance in this race on Election Day. Corona del Mar swept Temecula Valley, 25-18, 25-13, 25-17, in a CIF Southern Section Division 1-AA first-round match.

“They are an amazing team,” Barackman said of CdM after the Sea Kings’ sweep. “We knew were going to have a tough game ahead of us.”

The majority of the fans rooting for CdM probably weren’t too thrilled with the presidential results on Tuesday night, but they took delight watching the Sea Kings advance in the playoffs.

CdM will play against Lakewood in the second round on Thursday. The home team will be determined by coin flip on Wednesday. Lakewood swept Dos Pueblos, 25-16, 25-19, 25-23.

The Sea Kings (26-6) didn’t have much trouble with the Golden Bears (15-11). CdM never trailed in the second and third sets. Temecula Valley, which finished third in the Southwestern League, led, 5-2, and 6-3, in the first set for its biggest leads of the night.

But the Golden Bears couldn’t keep up with CdM, which went 10-0 to win the Pacific Coast League.

Sea Kings Coach Marissa Booker knows the road will get tougher. If the seeds play out, CdM will face Mater Dei and if it can win it would go up against Redondo Union, the top seed and winners of 29 straight.

“We definitely have a tough road ahead of us but it is a road we can conquer through,” Booker said of what she told her players before the playoffs began. “We have to make sure we are focused over the next 3 1/2 weeks.”

Booker also said staying mentally tough will be important throughout the playoffs.

CdM maintained discipline throughout its match against Temecula Valley.

Sophomore Hayley Hodson led the way with 11 kills, while senior Grace Kennedy added nine kills and six digs for the Sea Kings. CdM senior setter Kelsey Humphreys turned in a solid night with 24 assists and six digs.

Senior Cassidy Wilson led the Golden Bears with 13 kills and junior Kelsey Bawcombe finished with 10 kills.
