Soccer Roundup: Trip helps Laguna Beach

Share

It has become customary for the Laguna Beach High girls’ soccer team to make an annual trip during the holiday season to play nonleague games in Palm Desert. This year’s excursion proved to be yet another successful bonding trip for the Breakers, plus a final tune-up before the start of league play.

Before taking off to the desert, Laguna registered what Coach Bill Rolfing said was a “very satisfying result” against San Juan Hills, a scoreless tie against the host Stallions on Dec. 20. In their first outing in the desert, the Breakers suffered a last-minute, 2-1 loss Dec. 27 at Xavier Prep. They rebounded in their next outing to play a strong Indio team to a 2-2 draw on Dec. 28.

Summer Stanaland scored one goal in both matches and Katelyn Carballo scored the equalizing goal against Indio.

Laguna’s final match during the holiday break took place back home on Saturday against Woodbridge. The Breakers shut out the Warriors, 2-0, at Guyer Field.

Rolfing said the Breakers played their “best match to date” against Woodbridge. He praised the strong play at midfield by Chiara Noppenberger, Tessa Hopper and Sarah Hewlett. Amy Hewlett combined with keeper Kylie George to preserve the shutout.

Both goals in the game were long-distance scores posted by Audrey Pillsbury and Carballo.

Laguna, which starts six freshmen and three sophomores in its starting 11, begins its Orange Coast League title defense Tuesday. The Breakers (3-5-3) play host to Saddleback at 5 p.m. at Guyer Field.

The Breakers won their first league title in program history last year.
