Youth Scene: Tigers outlast Reds

The Tigers and Reds needed 10 innings to decide their Majors Division game Saturday at Ocean View Little League, and it was the Tigers who came away with a 3-2 victory.

Mauro Ballinas had a two-run double in the fourth inning that put the Tigers in front, 2-0. Ballinas also saw relief action on the mound.

Rowan Dupras was hot from the plate for the Reds and went three for four with a run batted in. He singled in the second and fourth innings and doubled in the seventh.

Minor A Division

The Red Wings faced the co-leaders of the Ocean View Little League Minor A Division in the past week, and came out with a pair of losses to the Muckdogs and Stars.

In a Saturday game, The Muckdogs scored an 11-5 win over the Red Wings. Nick Lawrence led a balanced attack for the Muckdogs going two for three and driving in a pair of runs. Kai Marden also went two for three and scored twice in addition to earning the victory on the mound.

For the Red Wings, leadoff hitter Daniel Kotkosky went two for three and scored three times, and Aiden Daniels drove in a pair of runs.

The Stars posted a 15-4 win over the Red Wings on April 17. Anthony Kumaric allowed just one run over four innings and belted a first-inning home run as the Stars remained atop the Minor A standings. Kumaric added an RBI double in the sixth to finish two for four. Chad Lux also drove in a pair of runs for the winners.

Kotkosky and Daniels each went two for three for the Red Wings.

Each team had six hits, but the Stars were patient enough to earn 16 walks.

Hot Rods 7, Stormchasers 6: The Hot Rods managed to grab the lead after a strong sixth inning and held off the Stormchasers Saturday.

A groundout in the sixth by Micah Kennedy scored Brandon Wood, who got on base with an RBI triple, and gave the Hot Rods the lead. Strong pitching by Christopher Roberts held the Stormchasers in check. Roberts allowed no earned runs, walked one, and struck out three.

The sixth inning proved to be a nail-biter when the Stormchasers’ Matthew Wilson hit a screamer into left field which was caught by Luke Ponchak, clinching the win for the Hot Rods.

Stormchasers scored three runs in the first inning two of which were scored on two errors and a walk by Aaron Marchbanks. In the third, the Stormchasers added two more runs on an RBI single by Owen Sideris and another walk by Marchbanks.

Brandon Wood also had an RBI triple.

Iron Pigs 6, Bats 2: A double by Owen Wessel followed by singles from Nick Skorheim and JC Cargasacchi gave the Iron Pigs an early lead and sent them to a win against the Bats.

Lucas Pantel started on the mound for the Iron Pigs and Nick Skorheim closed the game.

Hot Rods 4, Iron Pigs 3: Nick Madole hit a home run in the bottom of the first inning and the Hot Rods went on to edge the Iron Pigs.

Brandon Wood and AJ Hurtado pitched for the Hot Rods. Owen Wessel and Mikey Caira scored in the fifth and sixth innings for the Iron Pigs.

Hot Rods 5, Knights 4: The Hot Rods withstood a fifth-inning rally by the Knights to post a one-run victory.

The Knights took the early lead but Quentin Custodio of the Hot Rods made his presence felt at the plate as he went two for two. Gavin Kells doubled and Luke Ponchak’s RBI single scored Edison Chiu for the Hot Rods.

The Knights received strong pitching performances from Cole Kaplan, Matthew Scully and closer, AJ Valle.
