Holiday steps up at tourney

COSTA MESA — Jacob Holiday of Costa Mesa is hoping to maintain his momentum in the boys’ 14 singles division of the 20th annual Costa Mesa Summer Junior Classic, which features several local tennis players.

Holiday scored a 5-7, 6-4, 10-5 victory over Ty Edwards of Orange Tuesday to advance to Wednesday’s round of 16. Holiday will play against No. 7-seeded Patrick Maguire of Encinitas at 4 p.m. at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Holiday opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Zachary Gould of Greenwhich, Conn., Monday.

Andre Saleh of Newport Beach, the No. 5 seed in the boys’ 14s, was upset Tuesday, when he lost to Ye Cong Mo of Hong Kong, 6-2, 6-3.

Grant Brown of Newport Beach plays against No. 2 seeded Parth Sharma of Torrance in the round of 16. Brown beat Ze Wu Peng of Hong Kong, 6-3, 6-2, to advance.

•In the boys’ 12 singles division, Max McKennon of Newport Beach is the top seed. He’ll begin play in the round of 16 Wednesday at 11 a.m. against Jian Yu Tan of Hong Kong.

Steven Ferry of Corona del Mar plays against Tristan Kwok of Hong Kong also Wednesday at 11 a.m.. Ferry opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Chris Chae of Irvine.

Kyle Pham of Newport Coast will play in the round of 16 against Matthew Kim of Irvine at 11:30 a.m. Pham opened the tourney with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Bradford Le of Tustin on Monday.

•In the boys’ 16 singles division, Bjorn Hoffman of Corona del Mar High is the top seed. He opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Chu Nong Bu Jiang of Hong Kong in the round of 32 Tuesday.

Hoffman will play against Kenan Torlic of Irvine Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in a round of 16 match.

Ryan Andrews, a Newport Beach resident who is the No. 5 seed, advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-0, 6-0 win against David Kwon of Anaheim. Andrews will play against Ze Xi Zhao of Hong Kong, Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

•In the boys’ 18 singles division, Alastair Hurry of Corona del Mar is the top seed. He has advanced to the quarterfinals after Trevor Brown of San Diego withdrew because of illness on Tuesday for a match scheduled for Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Hurry will play his quarterfinal match Wednesday at 5 p.m.

•In the girls’ 16 singles division, Anna Radeva of Newport Harbor High is the top seed. She advanced to Wednesday’s round of 16 after beating Jacqueline Fancher of Irvine, 6-1, 6-0.

Radeva will play against Yvonne Peters-Washington of Pine Grove Mills, Penn. at noon.

•In the girls’ 18 singles division, Ashley Kratzer of Newport Beach is the No. 2 seed. She has advanced to Thursday’s quarterfinals at 8 a.m.

She advanced after Minami Lam of Whittier withdrew because of illness for a match scheduled Wednesday at 9 a.m.

•In the girls’ 12 singles division, Skyler Grishuk of Newport Beach advanced to Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Grishuk upset No. 2-seeded Emunah Daffon of Palm Springs, 6-1, 6-2, Tuesday to advance.

Grishuk will play against Adithya Karunaratne of Hong Kong Thursday at 9:30 a.m.

•In the girls’ 10 singles division, Reece Kenerson, a Corona del Mar resident, plays against No. 2-seeded Kaytlin Taylor of Huntington Beach in the third round Friday at 1 p.m. Kenerson beat Emily Thinnsen of Westminster, 6-4, 7-5, to advance.

Doubles matches are also taking place at CMTC. The tournament ends Friday.
