Beach Volleyball: Locals both win

Costa Mesa residents Jake Gibb and April Ross won men's and women's titles, respectively at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals' latest stop, Friday through Sunday in Atlantic City, N.J.

Gibb and partner Casey Patterson, the No. 2-seeded team, defeated top-seeded Phil Dalhausser and Sean Rosenthal, 21-19, 21-15, in the 41-minute final on Sunday.

Ross, a product of Newport Harbor High, and her partner, Jennifer Kessy topped Emily Day and Summer Ross, 23-25, 21-16, 15-13, in a 64-minute women's final. Ross and Kessy were the No. 1 seed, while Day and Ross came through qualifying.

April Ross and Gibb split $13,000 with their partners for the win.

Former UC Irvine standout Whitney Pavlik teamed with Kerri Walsh Jennings to share third place and $6,000.

The AVP Tour continues Saturday and Sunday in St. Petersburg, Fla.
