High School Roundup: Newport girls take fourth at Palos Verdes Invitational

Palos Verdes Invitational

PALOS VERDES ESTATES — Newport Harbor High finished fourth among 16 schools at a unique event in which the Nos. 1-7 runners run against rivals schools’ same designees in seven separate divisions.

Competing against the No. 1 runners, junior Erin Barth was fifth. But her time on the hilly two-mile course (12 minutes, 36 seconds) was eighth overall on the day.

Holly Clemence was third among No. 6 runners (13:32); Leah Van Dyke was fifth among No. 2 runners (13:33); Ashley Ima was fifth among No. 3 runners (13:38 Lauren Loucks was fourth among No. 5 runners (13:39); and Grace Clemence was fourth among No. 4 runners (13:54) for the Tars.

Central Park Invite

Gabby Pearson finished 27th in 21 minutes, 25 seconds to lead Estancia High to a ninth-place finish out of 16 teams Saturday at Central Park in Huntington Beach.

28. Viri Rios (28th in 21:27), Jackie Puentes (57th in 23:57), Estela Hernandez (62nd in 25:08) and Yaritza Sandoval (77th in 26:42) also competed for the Eagles.

Palos Verdes Invitational

PALOS VERDES ESTATES — Daysi Vazquez finished 10th in her race on the two-mile course in 14:09.62 to help lead Costa Mesa High to a ninth-place finish Saturday.

Gaby Perez was eighth in her race in 14:37.28.

BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Palos Verdes Invitational

PALOS VERDES ESTATES — Anuare Magana finished second in his race on the two-mile course in 10:32.73 to lead Costa Mesa High to a seventh-place finish Saturday.

Brett Bermudez was fourth in his race in 10:33.61.

Central Park Invite

Alberto Eispondola finished 74th in 19:28 to lead Estancia High, which finished 15th out of 16 teams at Central Park in Huntington Beach.

Justin Pearson (77th in 19:32), Angel Hernandez (91st in 20:30), Augie Gener (97th in 21:19), Alex Alatorre (108th in 23:20) and Jose Ruiz (113th in 25:53) also competed for the Eagles.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Estancia Tournament

Estancia finished seventh after beating Rancho Alamitos, 8-6, Saturday at the Eagles’ pool.

Notre Dame Sehrman Oaks won the tournament after beating Marina, 7-1.

Marina beat Estancia (2-8) earlier in the day, 12-5.

Cody Nelson and Jason Chesemore scored two goals each against Marina.

Nelson and Eli Sperling scored two goals each against Rancho Alamitos.
