Two of Glendale’s armed services groups will host a Veterans Day event Friday that will put the spotlight on women who have laced their combat boots in service of the United States.

American Legion Post 288 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1614 Veteran’s Day celebration will take place at Two Strike Park in La Crescenta. The armed forces medley will be performed by the Crescenta Valley High School Air Force Junior ROTC as part of a larger ceremony.

In past years, the posts have recognized different segments of the armed forces community, such as veterans of the Vietnam and Korean wars, respectively. This year, the executive committee planning the event decided to concentrate on recognizing women who have served.

Dick Clubb, a 20-year U.S. Army veteran, joined the American Legion and VFW posts three years ago and said he is happy to see the contribution of female veterans get more attention.

“We should certainly recognize them,” Clubb said. “I think the celebration is becoming a very big event in La Crescenta.”

The two posts are working to honor 12 women veterans from different service branches including, the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force.

The flag retirement ceremony, where strips of retired, worn American flags are burned will be conducted by Boy Scout Troop 288.

The Veteran’s Day celebration takes place Friday, Nov. 11, 3 p.m. Two Strike Park, 5107 Rosemont Ave., La Crescenta.
