Can it really be 10 years ago that Soroptimist International of Glendale began their wildly daring fundraiser, Bras for a Cause? It was an honor to be one of the three judges that first year and I remember the huge number of entries and the fun and wacky themes. The genius who started this unique event is the bold and savvy Kathy Lefkovits.
To mark the 10-year anniversary, a gala dinner is planned for April 20 at the Hilton Glendale. The theme is Soroptimist International of Glendale “Celebrates a Decade of Giving.” Cost to submit an entry is $100 and the deadline is April 13, so no excuse, there is plenty of time to create a decorated bra that’s in keeping with the theme — or not. They can be dropped off at the YWCA. For more information, call Cass Kreps at (818) 245-6552.
Lefkovits says she is pleased that the fundraiser has not only lasted 10 years in Glendale, but has been picked up by other Soroptimist groups.
“I feel like a proud mother,” she said. “I am so excited that this simple, crazy idea actually caught on and took off in such an amazing way. It says a lot for the open-mindedness of the members of Soroptimist International of Glendale. And now, Soroptimist groups across America and Canada are also holding Bras for a Cause events. In Glendale we have raised over $200,000 with this event and I just wonder what the total is from all of them combined across the nation.”
This year the Glendale Soroptimists have even more to celebrate, as this is its 70th anniversary of giving back to women in need. Proceeds from the gala dinner go to breast cancer services at three Glendale hospitals, as well as other charities that improve the lives of women and girls here and around the world.
