The Northwest Glendale Lions honored three people with Humanitarian Service Awards at their 17th annual Community Appreciation Dinner on March 13 at the Phoenicia restaurant in Glendale.

Recipients were Dr. Thomas Lee of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Dr. Roger Ohanesian of Orange County, and journalist Katya Cengel. Lee and Ohanesian are involved in the EyeCare Center in Armenia and a program to prevent blindness in premature children. Cengel recently visited Armenia and reported on the program for the Lions Magazine.

The awards were presented by Vince De Santis, sight conservation co-chairman for the Northwest Glendale Lions.

Chelsea Lee, a junior at Crescenta Valley High School, won the Zone C Metro Region contest on March 6 to advance to the Region Contest in the Lions Clubs International Student Speaker Contest. She had previously won the Northwest Glendale Lions Club contest. The topic this year is “Community Service — What Does It Mean and What Does It Matter?”

A total of $103,500 in college scholarships are awarded in the statewide program. Chelsea will next compete in the Metro Region contest in early April. Four region winners will speak at the District 4-L1 contest in Burbank on April 12.
