Resident installed president of state Elks

Hugh Scanlon, a native and lifelong resident of Glendale, was installed as president of the California Hawaii Elks Assn. at the annual convention in San Diego in May.

A member of the Elks for 37 years, he has progressed through the officer ranks and all chairs serving as exalted ruler in 1979. He has been a trustee of the Glendale lodge for more than 18 years, serving as chairman for the last 17.

After the Glendale lodge was destroyed by fire, he was the chairman of the building committee to rebuild the lodge. He has been district chairman of several committees and California Hawaii Elks Assn. vice chairman of Lapsation, state Americanism chairman, assistant sergeant-at-arms and association chaplain. He served as association trustee for three years and the last two as its chairman. He then assumed the position of association secretary, which he held for three years.

He has been married to his high school sweetheart, Dale, for 44 years, and they have two daughters, a son and four grandchildren.

Locals in chorus perform at Disney hall

The Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles will perform in concert at 8 p.m. today at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown Los Angeles.

Local singers in the chorus are Kevin Jones of Burbank and John Krueger and Ray Halpin of Glendale.

The highlight is the world premiere of “The End of it All” by electronic artist and music producer John Tejada. It was commissioned by the Gay Men’s Chorus and written for choir and electronica. Also on the program are a selection of opera choruses, a range of classic contemporary choral works and the Gay Men’s Chorus Harvey Milk Schools Project, a mix of music and spoken word highlighting the life of civic rights icon Harvey Milk to promote equality and acceptance and raise awareness about anti-gay bullying in schools.

In addition, the Gay Men’s Chorus will introduce its Alive Music Project Youth Chorus, made up of local students, who will perform on their own and then with the Gay Men’s Chorus. Lisa Baroutgian, a student at Glendale Community College, is a founding member of the youth chorus.
