Organizations: Women of heart will be honored

The YWCA of Glendale is having its 14th annual Legacy Luncheon beginning at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at The Castaway Restaurant in Burbank.

This year’s luncheon will honor five women with the Heart & Excellence Awards and two high school seniors with the Jane O’Connor Community Service Volunteer Award. The guest Speaker is Christina Avaness, author of “Living Beyond Organic.” Mistress of ceremonies is Michaela Pereira of KTLA’s Morning Show.

Five women will receive the Heart and Excellence Award.

Silva Hameline, owner of RE/MAX Elite, will be honored for her work with Path Achieve, the Children’s Miracle Network and Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Lori Hartwell is founder of the Renal Support Network, which is a patient-oriented and patient-run non-medical support group for patients with chronic kidney disease. Hartwell has had kidney disease since age 2.

Ann M. Herrmann is an elementary school teacher who has devoted her efforts to Cabrini Literary Guild and other projects supporting literacy for women, advancing educational opportunities, raising money for scholarships for students and books for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Elizabeth Manasserian has devoted herself to improving life for women and children in our community through her service with Glendale Healthy Kids and serving on the Commission on the Status of Women in Glendale.

Ellyn Semler has helped needy children and adults in the community through Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services and Hillside School.

Two young women will receive the Jane O’Connor Community Service Volunteers Awards.

Casey Ann Meurer, a senior at Flintridge Prep in La Cañada Flintridge, gave her time to obtain and fund the shipping of 1,000 boxes of school books, school supplies and athletic supplies to school children in Nigeria.

Makhyla Arden Pelayo, a senior at John Burroughs High School in Burbank, performed more than 400 hours of volunteering to Child S.H.A.R.E. and to the Braille Institute.

Trivia event supports literacy program

The Trivia Challenge 2011, presented by the Friends of the Burbank Public Library, will be held Thursday at the Castaway Restaurant, 1250 Harvard Road, Burbank. Social time is at 6:30 p.m. with silent auction and appetizer and dessert buffet, followed by the challenge at 7 p.m.

Master of ceremonies is Jack O’Neill, chief operating officer of the Bob Hope Legacy.

Proceeds go to the Burbank Public Library Literacy Services.

Leadership Burbank hosts wine tasting

The third annual fundraising wine tasting and open house will be presented by Leadership Burbank from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 29 at D’Argenzio Winery, 1204 W. Burbank Blvd., Burbank.

Proceeds support Leadership Burbank, which is a community development program that brings together a cross section of people living and/or working in the Burbank area who as emerging leaders hone their skills in understanding how a community can thrive when various components of that community get together in a shared vision.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for those in our community to come out and learn about Leadership Burbank and meet current and future leaders of Burbank businesses and organizations,” said President Mike Thomas.

Tickets are $60 and may be purchased at the door. There will be light refreshments and a tasting of six wines and one full pour. Opportunity drawings will be held and D’Argenzio Winery will also contribute a portion of wine sales to Leadership Burbank. Those who can’t attend can purchase wine up until April 29. D’Argenzio will contribute to the program if Leadership Burbank is mentioned.
