Janice Malofsky-Berlowe, regional lead social worker for Fresenius Medical Care in Burbank, will receive the Regional Social Worker Award from the National Kidney Foundation.

Fresenius Medical Care North America is a network of dialysis facilities.

Malofsky-Berlowe has been involved in nephrology work since 1976. Over the course of her career, she has helped define the field of renal social work and has been a major influence on other renal social workers in her area.

She has been treasurer on the executive committee of the Los Angeles chapter of the Council of Nephrology Social Workers for over twenty years. In 1989, she was honored with her chapter’s Social Worker of the Year award for outstanding achievement. She is a master social work practitioner who has participated in several renal organizations, including the National Kidney Foundation, Network 18 Coalition and the National Organization for Renal Disease. She recently volunteered at the National Kidney Foundation serving Southern California and Southern Nevada’s inaugural Kidney Walk, raising funds and awareness.

Students perform in choir festival

Glendale High School choir performed in the Los Angeles Master Chorale High School Choir Festival on April 15 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and five of the students were selected by taped audition for the Festival Honor Choir, which was conducted by Music Director Grant Gershon.

They are Frankie Castro, tenor,10th-grader; Kevin Chung, tenor, 11th-grader; Jose Galvez, bass, 12th-grader; Sofia Rezvani, alto,12th-grader; and Ariana Verhauz, soprano, 11th-grader.

The festival showcased a choir of 900 students from 24 Southland high schools and a featured performance by 80-voice Festival Honor Choir.

Graduating from basic training

Air Force Airman Patrick Kim graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

He is the son of Annie Kim of La Crescenta and Don Kim of Los Angeles.

Kim graduated in 2009 from Crescenta Valley High School.

Navy Seaman Ara Monique Y. Sandel, daughter of Zosimo L. Sandel, of Glendale, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

Pastor joins Community Church

Pastor Shaun Hilby, 32, has joined Glendale Community Church of God.

He is a graduate of Warner Pacific College in Portland, Ore., with his degree in religion and Christian ministries. He has served as a youth pastor for the past eight years, before accepting the call to be the preaching and vision pastor of Glendale Community Church of God.

He is married to wife Lee Shea and has two sons, Simeon and Malachi.

Service times are 10:15 a.m. Sunday and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Prospective members are welcome.

Country club has new general manager

La Cañada Flintridge Country Club recently welcomed its new General Manager, Rick Adams, announced Randy Dreyfuss, the club’s president.

“Adams’ managerial experience and leadership as a golf professional at some of the finest properties in Southern California made him the ideal candidate to lead our club,” Dreyfuss said. “Additionally, Adams grew up locally in San Marino, so he is familiar with our club’s history and today’s competitive marketplace.”

Forest Lawn names new president

Forest Lawn Memorial-Parks and Mortuaries announced the promotion of Darin Drabing to president and chief executive officer. Drabing had been serving as the association’s executive vice president and chief operating officer since Jan. 31, 2007. Drabing succeeds outgoing president & CEO John F. Llewellyn, who was named chairman of Forest Lawn’s Board of Directors.

“Darin is a distinguished professional who is highly regarded throughout the organization and the industry,” said Llewellyn. “His strong understanding of the consumer’s needs and a commitment to excellent, caring service, coupled with his remarkable leadership and people skills, make him the ideal choice to take over the reins of the association.”

Prior to being named executive vice president and chief operating officer in 2007, Drabing had served as senior vice president of operations since 1999. Prior to that, he had served for a decade as vice president of Forest Lawn’s Cypress location, after having joined Forest Lawn in 1984 as an apprentice embalmer.

Serving bank’s small business owners

Bank of America announced that Cela Tarver has been appointed small business banker for Glendale.

Tarver will provide more personalized attention to small business owners by spending time with them at their place of business and learning more about what their companies do. Customers will have convenient access to local small business expertise and a dedicated resource who understands their business.
