Annual adoption program takes animals from shelters to homes
Local animals will be available for adoption this weekend in an effort to empty local shelters of pets who need forever homes.
The Burbank Animal Shelter and the Pasadena Humane Society will participate in the fourth annual Clear the Shelters program on Saturday.
Clear the Shelters is a national pet adoption drive sponsored by NBC4 and Telemundo 52 to get available animals into owners’ homes. It’s an initiative to lower the number of animals at shelters across the country.
The program has helped more than 160,000 pets find new homes since 2015, according to the Clear the Shelters website.
The two organizations join roughly 65 shelters participating in the event. Adoption facilities will waive or give customers discount fees as part of the adoption drive.
The Burbank Animal Shelter usually charges $125 for a dog adoption and $78 for cats, while the Pasadena shelter asks for $130 for dogs and $75 for cats. For this weekend, all participating shelters will lower their adoption fees to $20 for dogs, cats, rabbits and other animals available for adoption.
The Burbank Animal Shelter will have about 48 dogs, 25 cats and five rabbits available for adoption, said Stacie Wood, senior animal control officer.
Last year, 25 pets were adopted during the Clear the Shelters campaign in Burbank.
The Pasadena Humane Society will have about 100 animals for adoption. Last year, 66 pets were adopted from the Pasadena site during Clear the Shelters.
“Clear the Shelters brings awareness to animals looking for new homes,” said Jamie Holeman, director of public relations and marketing of the Pasadena Humane Society. “It will be a really fun day at the shelter.”
To adopt a pet, visit either the Pasadena Humane Society at 361 S. Raymond Ave., Pasadena, or the Burbank Animal Shelter at 1150 N. Victory Place, Burbank.
