A 25-year-old homeless man allegedly stole a woman’s purse Sunday evening in Glendale after reportedly hitting her with an umbrella.

The Glendale Police Department responded to a report of a robbery around 6:25 p.m. at the intersection of Central and Wilson avenues, where a 34-year-old woman’s purse had been stolen.

Tahnee Lightfoot, a police spokeswoman, said the woman was walking home from work and was talking on her cellphone when someone came up behind her and began to grab her purse.

After a brief struggle, the man hit the woman on her hands with an umbrella and ran away. Lightfoot said the woman was unharmed.

Officers eventually located a man matching the purse snatcher’s description near the area of Pacific and Wilson avenues. He was found in possession of the woman’s debit card, and her purse was recovered nearby.

The man was arrested on suspicion of robbery and identified as Jon Swenson.

He is currently being held in lieu of $50,000 bail and had a court appearance scheduled for Tuesday.
