Winslow Homer Engravings on Display

The exhibit “Winslow Homer in America” will feature one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of wood engravings by one of the most celebrated artists of the nineteenth century, and will be on display at the Forest Lawn Museum in Glendale through Sunday, April 15.

The exhibition covers both the early years (1857-1866) as well as the years following the American Civil War (1867-1874) with one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of wood engravings by Winslow Homer.

“Winslow Homer is one of the most celebrated American artists of the nineteenth century, and is identified by most historians as one of the most important American artists of all time,” said Alison Bruesehoff, Museum executive director for Forest Lawn. “His watercolors, prints, and drawings are exhibited frequently at notable and fashionable venues.” Those venues include numerous art galleries, auction houses and private collections of national importance.

All of Homer’s most popular pieces are included in this exhibition of wood engravings produced over a period of nearly three decades. Themes chosen by the artist relate to family and community life before the American Civil War of 1861-1865, leading into a more somber approach following the War years.

This exhibition was organized by Contemporary and Modern Print Exhibitions. The Forest Lawn Museum is located within Forest Lawn-Glendale at 1712 S. Glendale Ave., Glendale. The Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
