Youth orchestra to perform with choir

The Glendale Youth Orchestra will be joining the Southern California Mormon Choir this month for a concert at the Alex Theatre.

Formed in 1989, the youth orchestra comprises musicians from sixth grade through college from Los Angeles and the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys.

The upcoming concert, which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. March 18, is the second performance in the orchestra’s 19th year and will feature Mozart’s “The Haffner Symphony.” After the intermission, the Mormon choir will join the orchestra onstage for a performance of 14 choruses from Handel’s “Messiah.”

Tickets can be purchased for $9.50 at the Alex Theatre Box Office. Students, senior citizens and groups of 15 people or more can purchase tickets for $16 each.

? Arbor Day event set for next week

Glendale Beautiful will sponsor an Arbor Day celebration Tuesday. The organization has pushed tree planting programs for 58 years, putting more than 6,500 trees in Glendale.

Those wishing to order a tree and donate it to the program for placement in the city can call Gladys Wymore at (818) 246-3634.

The tree-planting event begins at 10 a.m. at the Historic Casa Adobe de San Rafael at 1330 Dorothy Drive. A coffee social is planned for 10:30 a.m. If it rains, the festivities will move into the Glendale Civic Auditorium, 1401 N. Verdugo Road.
