STRANGIS TO TAKE SHOW TO CAL LUTHERAN

Crescenta Valley High boys’ basketball player Eric Strangis recently made his decision concerning where he’ll play collegiately next season.

Strangis, a senior forward/guard, will stay close by after opting to play at Cal Lutheran University, a Division III school in Thousand Oaks. He’ll receive a partial academic scholarship.

Strangis averaged 11 points and four rebounds per game last season after helping the Falcons advance to the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA playoffs. He picked up All-Pacific League and All-Area second-team accolades despite missing the first nine games of the regular season because of a torn labrum.

“It’s really nice to have [the decision] off my shoulders,” said Strangis, who considered several other universities. “Now I can relax and try to keep getting better as a player.

“I’m going to a place where I’ll be real comfortable. To know that I’m going to the next level is great because basketball is my love in life.”

Crescenta Valley Coach Shawn Zargarian said Cal Lutheran should provide the necessary instruction to help Strangis improve in the classroom and on the court.

“The first thing I told him was that you get to play four more years,” Zargarian said. “It’s a great accomplishment for him, and I told him to be excited.

“Hopefully with the fundamentals he picked up here and the offense we ran at CV will prepare him for the college atmosphere.”

ERDMAN SURVIVES FIRST CUT ON ‘BIG BREAK KA’ANAPALI’

After three episodes and one elimination, Courtney Erdman is still alive on the Golf Channel’s reality television series “Big Break Ka’anapali.”

The 2000 Crescenta Valley High graduate is one of 11 remaining cast members on the series that aims to give professional golfers a break to further their career, including the chance to play in a tournament on the LPGA Tour.

Episodes of the “Big Break” air every Tuesday at 7 p.m. on the Golf Channel.

While the “Big Break” wrapped up filming in December, Erdman has been busy playing on the Duramed Futures Tour.

After missing the cut in the season-opening event, Erdman has finished in the money in her past three events, including a tie for 75th at last weekend’s Jalapeno Duramed Futures Golf Classic in McAllen, Texas.

Erdman, who is currently 63rd on the money list, will tee it up in the El Paso Golf Classic in El Paso, Texas beginning today.

BOTTS’ MAJOR LEAGUE CAREER ON HOLD

Former Glendale Community College standout baseball player Jason Botts was designated for assignment by the Texas Rangers on Tuesday following his fourth stint with the club.

The Rangers have 10 days to trade or release the 27-year old Botts or get him back through waivers before he goes back to Triple-A.

In limited action, Botts hit .158 this season. He has a career .230 average in 282 at-bats over parts of four seasons.
