Share

GUILD AGREEMENTS

The board approved several contract agreements that have been negotiated between the college and the Glendale College Guild.

The agreements included such items as: how overpayment of money to faculty should be repaid to the college, and what the academic calendar will look like for the two coming school years.

The two sides also agreed that the college will make a second health maintenance organization option available to academic employees on a one-year trial basis.

WHAT IT MEANS

The items approved by the board have already been ratified by the members of the guild. The guild and the college are still in the midst of negotiating salary increases for teachers for the current fiscal year.

BUDGET PRINCIPLES

The college board passed a resolution listing the principles the trustees will abide by in developing and approving the college’s budget for the 2008-09 fiscal year.

The resolution includes such items as the college’s intention to not reduce its workforce through layoffs; the college’s plan to not replace retirees with permanent employees for at least six months unless doing so is approved by the college’s president; the college’s plan to aggressively conserve energy to bring down utilities costs; and the college’s plan to maintain a general reserve of 5% of the college’s total budget.

Some faculty members spoke out in opposition to the college’s maintenance of the 5% general reserve, arguing that doing so limited the amount of money that would be in play for things like salary negotiations.

WHAT IT MEANS

Trustees will use the resolution as a set of guiding principles in developing next year’s budget this summer.
