Ham Radio Field Day scheduled

The public is invited to Ham Radio Field Day, a 24-hour event being held at Deukmejian Wilderness Park beginning on Saturday, June 28 at 11 a.m.

The event is hosted by GEARS (Glendale Emergency Auxiliary Radio Service) and the CVRC (Crescenta Valley Radio Club). Over the course of the 24 hours, radio operators from around the U.S. and Canada will be available to demonstrate how they use a combination of computers, solar panels, generators and antennas to communicate.

There is no cost to attend.

Fourth of July Parade planned

The Rotary Club of Sunland–Tujunga–Shadow Hills is sponsoring the 26th Annual Fourth of July Parade. This year’s theme is “Celebrating a Small Town with a Big Heart.” This year the men and women of the community will be honored who donate their time to ensure that the town continues to thrive and grow while still protecting the rural lifestyle.

The grand marshal is Judy Norton, best known for her role as Mary Ellen on the TV show “The Waltons.”

The parade starts at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 4 at the corner of Mt. Gleason Avenue and Foothill Boulevard and continues along Foothill to Sunland Boulevard.

Fireworks tickets on sale around town

Tickets are now available for the July 4th fireworks show at La Crescenta Elementary School. The gates open at 4 p.m. and will feature music, carnival rides and food. The gates will close at 8:30 p.m., with an estimated time of 9 p.m. for the fireworks show to begin Tickets are $5 each and children 2 and under get in free. Tickets are available at the following locations until the day before the event: CV Chamber office at 3131 Foothill Blvd., Unit D, (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.); Farmer’s Market in Montrose every Sunday (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.); Bob Smith Toyota, 3322 Foothill Blvd.; J’s Maintenance, 3550 Foothill Blvd.; Paul’s Professional Window Washing, 2707 Foothill Blvd. and the Valley Sun Newspapers, 1061 Valley Sun Lane, La Cañada. There will also be a limited number of tickets available on the 4th after noon at the corner of La Crescenta Ave. and Prospect Ave.

Tickets will be first come first serve at the gate on the 4th.

ALS support meetings scheduled

The next meeting of the support group for people with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), their families and friends take place on Saturday, July 5 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Valencia United Methodist Church at 25718 McBean Parkway in Valencia. Support groups are provided by The ALS Association, Greater Los Angeles Chapter and are free of charge.

Montrose hosting block party

The July 4th Weekend Block Party is being held on Sunday, July 6, in the 2300 and 2400 blocks of Honolulu Avenue. Hosted by the Montrose Shopping Park, the event will feature a vintage hot rod show. More than 100 vintage hot rods and street rods are expected at this invitation-only hot car gathering, which is filled to capacity with auto-aficionados eager to show off their wheels. Four hot rod race cars will be starting up their powerful engines twice during the day, once at 10:15 a.m. and again at 12:15 pm.
