Park to offer music, movie

If you’re looking for a fun event to entertain your family and do some good for others in the process, Friends of Crescenta Valley Parks, the Crescenta Valley Town Council and the Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation department is inviting the community out to Two Strike Park this Saturday for Music and Movies in the Park.

Two Strike Park is at 5107 Rosemont Ave. in La Crescenta.

The event begins at 3 p.m. with a dedication of the park’s new California Native Garden, a unique water feature recently installed at the park, which was designed and instigated by Crescenta Valley High School student and Girl Scout Brianne Johnson.

From 4 to 9 p.m., the county Parks and Recreation department’s mobile rec unit will provide games, face painting, and various art, craft and water activities.

“You name it, we’ll have it here, whatever creative minds can come up with,” said William Mercado, recreation service supervisor for Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation.

A rock ‘n roll group, Mike Perry and the Title Wave Band, will perform from 6 to 7:15 p.m., followed by a showing of the classic G-rated, 1961 Disney movie, “The Parent Trap” starring Hayley Mills. Audience members should bring a blanket or lawn chair for seating.

The event is free for all, but everyone is asked to bring a canned food item to help fill the Glendale Salvation Army’s food pantry.

Local food banks have seen a drop in donations in recent months and The Salvation Army is no exception.

“Unfortunately, we’ve had a lot more need for food lately and the donations aren’t great at this time of year, so we’re really happy to get any help we can,” said Capt. Rachel Ray of The Salvation Army in Glendale.

Ray and her husband, Capt. Rio Ray, recently assumed command of The Salvation Army’s Glendale post. They and their two young children moved here from Colorado. “Being new to the area we really haven’t had a chance to acquaint ourselves with everything, but it’s nice to know the community is ready to help out with those in need,” she said.

Crescenta Valley Town Councilman Steve Pierce, also a member of Friends of Crescenta Valley Parks, said he’s excited about Saturday’s activities. The park has hosted music in the park events in the past two years, but this is the first time for an event of this magnitude at Two Strike Park. The movie and the county’s mobile recreation unit, which is available at the park from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, also will be bonuses for the event, he added.

“This park has been just grass and trees for too long,” Pierce said. “Now, with activities like this and the mobile rec unit, Al Evans and the county have really revitalized the park and given it a new dimension. This is going to be really wonderful.”
