It’s official, St. Francis High will hold its 20th Annual Golf Classic on Sept. 8 this year. The event will be held at both Brookside courses in Pasadena with a field of 250 golfers set to play.

The tournament, which started as an annual reunion for St. Francis alumni, has turned into a great community event, providing scholarships for deserving students with the proceeds. Last year, the Classic raised $60,000.The annual golf classic has raised over $300,000 since it’s inception in 1988.

“The Alumni Council takes pride in providing scholarships for students enrolled at St. Francis,” said Rick Dinger, who will chair this year’s Classic.

In a recent development, the Alumni Council has unanimously voted to dedicate this year’s classic to former president of St. Francis High for 17 years, Father Matt. Father Matt is an alumni himself, class of 1973.

“From what I have been told by the much older alums,” Dinger said, “this tournament started out first as a reunion, then someone had the idea to make it a goal to raise enough for one scholarship and in 20 years it has grown to over 230 golfers and is now raising over $60,000 each year for scholarships. Father Matt has been instrumental in the growth of this event.”

“Father Matt is not the kind of guy that enjoys the limelight,” St. Francis Alumni Council President Kevin Danni said. “However dedicating the tournament to him is fitting since he has been such a good friend to everyone.”

St. Francis Alumni, parents and future parents of St. Francis are invited to play.

The tournament is open to all golfers. For more information, call the Development Dept. at (818) 790-0325 or log on to www.SFHS.net and click on the alumni link.
