Postage rate being increased on May 11

The US Postal Service has announced a rate increase effective May 11, 2009.

A first class letter will go from 42 cents to 44 cents. There will be no change in the additional ounce rate of 17 cents per ounce.

Postcard rates will be raised one cent, from 27 cents to 28 cents.

To avoid the rate increase, letter writers are encouraged to purchase “Forever” stamps. These stamps are first class stamps that have no postal denomination printed on them. If purchased prior to May 11, the cost will be 42 cents per stamp. After the rate increase, each Forever stamp will cost 44 cents.

Relay workers to paint town purple

On Saturday, April 18, volunteers from the 2009 Foothills Relay For Life, including Girl Scouts and community groups, will paint purple footprints across the windows of over 40 Montrose businesses, hang purple ribbons and tie purple balloons along Honolulu Avenue to promote the upcoming American Cancer Society’s annual Foothills Relay for Life event. Paint The Town Purple raises awareness of the Foothills Relay For Life 24 hour walk, a fundraiser to honor those who have lost their battle with cancer, celebrate the survivors and support those fighting the disease. Foothills Relay for Life takes place at Clark Magnet High School May 16-17. The community is invited to take part in Paint The Town Purple, and celebrate with the luminaria ceremony at 7:30 p.m. on the northwest corner of Honolulu Avenue and Ocean View Boulevard. For further information, contact Reagan and Chuck Boone at (818) 248-9402 or The American Cancer Society at www.relayforlife.org/foothillsca.
