GLENDALE — The following are odds and ends from the local sports scene.
EMMONS REMAINS STRONG WITH KNIGHTS
Former Crescenta Valley High standout baseball player Dustin Emmons has continued his successful summer as a member of the Corvallis Knights of the collegiate West Coast League. Emmons, who will be a junior in the fall at UC Riverside, is 2-0 with an 0.64 earned-run average in three starts and five appearances for the Knights (16-4-1).
The right-hander, who earned All-Big West Conferences honors this past season, has struck out eight and allowed 10 hits and one run in 14 innings.
Emmons, a former All-Area Baseball Player of the Year and News-Press Male Athlete of the Year, pitched a scoreless seventh inning during a 5-4 road loss to the Bend Oaks on Saturday.
LOCALS FARE WELL IN FIRST ROUND
A pair of local boys’ golfers turned in quality efforts Tuesday during the first round of the West Junior Open at Robinson Ranch Golf Club in the Santa Clarita Valley.
Crescenta Valley High athlete Andrew Cho carded a two-under-par 70 to put him in a three-way tie for fourth place. Marco Fortades, a Glendale resident who attends Loyola, carded a 74. Fortades is in a five-way tie for eighth.
The second-round will be held today with the final round slated for Thursday.
GLENDALE TIRE PROS MAKES SOCCER DONATIONS
For the 10th consecutive year, the Uniroyal Soccer Program is supporting soccer communities across the country. Glendale Tire Pros will donate funds and equipment to AYSO Region 88, which serves Glendale and La Crescenta.
Beginning Aug. 1, players will receive a certificate that can be redeemed for a free soccer ball at Glendale Tire Pros while supplies last. Uniroyal Tire and Glendale Tire Pros will also donate $2 for every Uniroyal tire sold during the 30-day program.
In celebration of the program’s 10th anniversary, Uniroyal Tire will give away a soccer ball every day in 2009 via their website, www.UniroyalTires.com/sweeps.
The daily winners will be eligible for the grand prize drawing at the end of the year, which includes the top 10 items a family needs for the 2010 soccer season: a $500 gas card, a set of Uniroyal tires, a camera/video recorder, car service for the season, a GPS system, car detailing, a cooler/chair package, a $250 parents’ night out gift card, a $250 snack/food gift card and a $500 sporting goods gift card.
“We are proud to support AYSO Region 88, which gives local youth the experience of being a part of a team and helps them learn valuable skills they can use on and off the field,” said Richard Slavett of Glendale Tire Pros said in a statement. “I can’t wait to see the happy faces when the children get their free soccer balls.”
