New unemployment figures show little change in Glendale, Burbank

Unemployment figures in Glendale and Burbank dipped slightly in August, as numbers remained nearly flat in most of the state, according to figures released Friday by the California Employment Development Department.

In Glendale, the unemployment rate fell from 11.7% in July to 11.3% in August. In Burbank the figure dropped from 10.9% to 10.6%.

In Los Angeles County, the unemployment rate in August was 13%, down from 13.4% in July but above the June figure of 12.2%.

The statewide job picture changed little, growing from 12.3% unemployment in July to 12.4% in August.

The motion picture industry, which has picked up 18,000 jobs, or 15%, since the same period last year, grew by only 600 jobs, or 0.4%, in August, according to the state Employment Development Department.

Retail jobs around the state were essentially flat, as was the health care field, which employs roughly 400,000 Californians, according to the state. Federal, state and local government jobs all showed modest declines of roughly 1% in August.

In La Crescenta, the unemployment rate fell from 6.7% in July to 6.5% in August. In La Cañada Flintridge, the rate slipped from 5.2% to 5.1%.
