Anne Louise Wallace
Anne Louise Wallace, the second daughter of Ella and William Wallace, was born on August 19, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio. She died on February 28, 2011 in her home in La Canada at 88 years of age.
Anne grew up in Cleveland during the Great Depression. She was the first person in her family to go to college, graduating from Ohio State University with bachelor and master degrees in home economics. There she met her future husband, Alex who was working toward a doctorate in chemical engineering. They married in 1942. Anne taught high school until they moved to Wisconsin to run a plant that produced lactose for growing penicillin mold. After their three daughters were born, synthetic penicillin became available, and the family moved to Los Angeles.
In 1959, they settled in La Canada when Alex took a position at JPL. As she raised her daughters, Anne was active in Girl Scouts and the La Canada Presbyterian Church. She was an avid sewer and gardener, and enjoyed hiking in the Sierras with Alex. In 1962, she became a feminist after reading Betty Freidan’s The Feminine Mystique. It was through her encouragement that each of her daughters earned degrees in Medicine or Law. Anne herself, took classes to renew her teaching credential, and resumed her teaching career in the Pasadena School District. She was an outstanding teacher who was devoted to her students. The year before she retired, she was recognized with the Distinguished Teacher Award by the Verdugo Hills Hospital Association.
In the years after her retirement, Anne was able to further pursue her love for traveling. She enjoyed several vacations with Alex in their beloved Hawaii, as well as trips with her daughters, friends or Elder Hostel to England, Europe, Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Australia, Vietnam, Thailand and Bali.
Anne was the central figure in her extended family. She played an active role in the up-bringing of her grandchildren and is remembered by each with special fondness. In 2003, after several major surgical procedures, Delmy Valencia, her caregiver, moved in with Anne. They had a wonderful time together laughing often and traveling to her grandchildrens’ graduations and daughter’s ranch in Northern California.
Anne was kind, caring, generous and fun-loving. She was a true intellectual - a life-long learner who was fascinated by world events and politics. She was the perfect listener for her family and friends. In her final weeks, she expressed gratitude for having lived such a wonderful life.
Preceded in death by Alex and her sister, Jean Norman, Anne leaves behind her daughters, Jeanne, Marjorie and Sandra Wallace, her sons-in law, Andrew Deutsch and Michael Frankel, four grandchildren, Peter, Phillip and Dana Deutsch, and Stephanie Greenwood-Wallace and a niece Judy Buttrick. A memorial service was held March 8 at Forest Lawn – Glendale.
