Lorraine Webber

Lorraine Webber died 24 August at her home in Glendale after a long illness. She was 92.Doris Lorraine Burger was born 7 September 1918 in Brooklyn, New York. In the 1930’s she moved with her family to Glendale, where she attended business school and worked for the Glendale Board of Education. At the outbreak of World War II she enlisted for the duration in the U.S. Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service), at that time the only unit in the Navy in which women were allowed to serve. For most of the war she was stationed on Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands.Soon after the war she married another veteran, Martin W. Webber, and they established a home in Glendale.Though mainly occupied with maintaining an unusually orderly home and raising her two sometimes difficult children, she found time to be a volunteer Braille transcriber, to paint, and to volunteer at the American Freedoms Center bookstore in Glendale. Other abiding interests were opera and birds, the latter providing part of the inspiration for her younger son to become a scientist. Lorraine was one of those lucky people who seem to have been born happy. Throughout her life, even in her declining years, all were charmed by her radiant and sincere good humor.Lorraine was pre-deceased by her husband Martin and her sisters Ruth Murphy and Virginia Schaeffer. She is survived by her sons Gary Webber of Glendale and Tom Webber of Gainesville, Florida.
