A 28-year-old Hispanic woman was found dead inside her apartment after firefighters extinguished an early morning blaze, Los Angeles County coroner’s office spokesman Craig Harvey said.

The fire was reported at 5:56 a.m. in the 100 block of South Meredith Avenue, according to department spokeswoman Lisa Derderian.

The fire was contained to the woman’s apartment, one in an eight-unit complex. But some of the other apartments sustained water and smoke damage.

Other residents in the building were temporarily evacuated.

Police and fire officials remained at the scene Friday morning as they investigated the cause of the blaze and Los Angeles County coroner’s officials arrived to examine the body.
