Public Works Director Steve Zurn applies for city manager job

Public Works Director Steve Zurn confirmed this week that he has applied for the open Glendale city manager position.

In coming weeks, Beverly Hills-based Norm Roberts Consulting Group is expected to present the 25 candidates who have applied for the job to the City Council. City Manager Jim Starbird plans to retire in December.

Roberts has declined to reveal who’s on the list to the public until after council review.

Community Development Director Hassan Haghani has not confirmed whether he’s applied for the position.

Haghani and Zurn sit next to each other on the dais during the Tuesday night meetings and oversee large departments at City Hall.

Last week, George Chapjian, who left his post as community services and parks director in December for a similar job in Long Beach, confirmed that he also applied.

Burbank City Manager Michael Flad quashed rumors that he too was interested in the position.

The consultant, Norm Roberts, has said that the month-long recruitment period was about a third as long as a normal search, but the City Council indicated they didn’t want an extended interim period between Starbird and finding his replacement.
