The Larry Zarian Patriotic Fund

Many of you know that we lost our good friend Larry Zarian on Oct.13. “The People's Mayor,” Zarian served on the Glendale City Council for 16 years. During that time, he helped influence and shape Glendale's future.

Although he said the council did not always agree on issues, they respected one another and came together for the good of Glendale.

In the nearly 30 years I knew Larry, we often attended many of the same political and social events. He loved talking about Glendale, our Jewel City. He worked tirelessly to attract people and businesses to this fine community. Not only was he our cheerleader, but he was involved in many worthy organizations, such as the Armenian Society of Los Angeles, Glendale Adventist Medical Center, Self-Aid Workshop and Glendale Kiwanis.

He was also a strong supporter of the Salvation Army. For more than 25 years, the Glendale Assn. of Realtors has sponsored its Can-tree event, which now collects and donates funds to the Salvation Army, Ascencia (formerly known as PATH Achieve Glendale), Glendale Police Department's youth program (STAR), as well as other deserving local charities.

I chaired the event in its beginning years. Zarian always made himself available to be the auctioneer for our silent auction, as well as other events we had.

Zarian was a member of Glendale Kiwanis for nearly 25 years. On Fridays, when I saw him at our luncheon meetings, he always stood up to give me a big smile and a hug. His humor would light up many a Friday Kiwanis meetings.

He usually sat in the same chair and at the same table, and this past Friday we felt his presence, even though we knew that chair would never be filled by him again. He was our true friend, and we will miss him.

He would be proud to know that the Glendale Kiwanis has created the Larry Zarian Patriotic Fund. He loved the American Flag and was a great patriot and spoke for many years at the city's service on Memorial Day.

Anyone who would like to make a donation to the fund in Larry's memory may do so. Please make your check payable to the Glendale Kiwanis Foundation and designate the Larry Zarian Patriotic Fund. All donations received in his memory will be used for future patriotic endeavors within the community and will be dispersed as a “gift” from the Larry Zarian Patriotic Fund.

Donations may be mailed to: Glendale Kiwanis Foundation, P.0. Box 10545, Glendale, CA 91209-3545.
