GCC students will perform in month ahead

The Glendale Community College music department offers a wide range of courses in fundamentals, musicianship, harmony, appreciation, history, technology and recording as well as classes in piano, voice and guitar. And the Applied Music Program consists of individual lessons on most instruments and voice along with recital class and performing in ensembles.

Part of the curriculum for many music students is live performance. Performing ensembles will be holding concerts now through mid-December as will individual vocalists and instrumentalists participating in recitals.

On Saturday, Nov. 19 the Saturday Jazz Band and Vocal Jazz Ensemble will perform together in concert at 7:30 p.m. in the GCC Auditorium. Craig Kupka and Clare Delto are the music directors for the concert which will feature jazz and pop tunes. The Saturday Jazz Band is an all-student group and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble is a small group of auditioned students. The “Big Bad Jazz Band,” featuring auditioned students and experienced jazz players, will give a concert on Nov. 20 at 4 p.m. in the auditorium under the direction of Kupka. Admission to either performance is $7 general and $5 for students and seniors.

The Applied Music program will showcase its best instrumentalists and vocalists in a recital on Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. Bethany Pflueger is the coordinator. Admission to the recital is free.

Dr. Jayne Campbell will lead the College Choir, Chamber Singers and Opera Vignettes in a holiday-themed concert on Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Admission is $7 general and $5 for students and seniors.

Pflueger conducts the Glendale College Community Orchestra which will perform in a Dec. 4 concert in the auditorium at 3 p.m. Admission is $7 general and $5 for students and seniors. The orchestra is made up of auditioned instrumentalists combined with students from GCC’s music department. It is a full orchestra with complete woodwind, brass, percussion and string sections.

There are also three free recitals. The Chamber Music Recital will be at 4 p.m. on Dec. 6. Ensembles from the chamber music class perform in their final recital. On Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m. Byron Delto coordinates the Student Guitar Recital featuring classical and jazz guitar students and the Jazz Guitar Ensemble. Dr. Lucy Nargizyan coordinates the Piano Recital on Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. All three recitals will be held in room 211 of the auditorium.

The college is located at 1500 N. Verdugo Rd.

The final music performance of the semester is the Concert Singers on Dec. 11. The concert will begin at 4 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, 1300 E. Colorado St. Dr. Peter Green is music director for the advanced choral group who will perform holiday favorites. Admission is $10 general and $7 for students and seniors.

Auditions coming for spring musical

Open auditions for the GCC Theatre Arts Department production of the musical “Godspell” will be held Wednesday, Nov. 16 and Thursday, Nov. 17 in the GCC Auditorium at 7 p.m.

Those planning to audition should prepare a one-minute contemporary monologue, a pop song showing vocal range (bring the sheet music for the accompanist) and be prepared to move by wearing appropriate clothing and shoes. Call backs will be Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. Rehearsals for “Godspell” will begin in the spring semester.

The “Godspell” book is written by John Michael Tebelak, music and lyrics are by Stephen Schwartz, based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew.

Cast members must enroll in theatre arts workshops in the spring semester. The required courses are Theatre Arts 160 – Musical Theatre Workshop, Music 170 – Music for Musical Theatre and Theatre Arts 129 – Backstage Lab for Performers.

The musical will be staged for two weekends with eight performances beginning April 19 in the auditorium. Melissa R. Randel will be the director with musical direction by Clare Delto.
