Grant aims to help veterans get technology, manufacturing jobs
About 100 veterans are set to get free training in manufacturing and information technology thanks to a $465,000 federal grant approved by the City Council.
The bulk of the money, $237,000, will go to Los Angeles-based Managed Career Solutions to train 65 veterans in information technology, according to a city report. Glendale Community College is set to receive $115,000 to train 47 veterans in manufacturing work.
The Verdugo Jobs Center on Central Avenue will get $113,000 to provide career coaching and job placement services for program participants.
Don Nakamoto, a labor force analyst for the Verdugo Jobs Center, said there’s still room in both training programs. About 25 candidates have applied for the manufacturing program, while another 30 have applied for the information technology training, Nakamoto said.
The applicants should be recently released veterans, but there could be exceptions for older veterans who are out of work, he said.
Although the grant was originally distributed to the Verdugo consortium — made up of Burbank, Glendale and La Cañada Flintridge — applicants don’t have to be from those cities, Nakamoto said. Glendale is in charge of distributing the grant.
