Men arrested on suspicion of selling magazines

Three men were arrested Tuesday on suspicion of going door-to-door in several neighborhoods and selling magazines without permits, police said.

Corey Broadbent, 21, of Phoenix Lake, Michael Rivers, 24, of Fullerton and James Earl Hensley, 24, of Arkansas were allegedly telling north Glendale residents that if they purchased magazine subscriptions, they could win a trip to Italy, according to Glendale police reports.

But the men didn’t have city-issued permits to sell magazine subscriptions in Glendale, Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.

Police have seen a jump in the number of people doing door-to-door soliciting without city-issued permits, he said.

“It’s out of control,” Lorenz said.

Police, he said, take complaints seriously because some solicitations are scams.

Broadbent and Hensley allegedly sold subscriptions through Arizona-based company, Dynasty Technologies, to residents who declined to give their names and addresses, police said.

The men told police the residents paid cash and asked that the magazines be donated to local hospitals.

Broadbent was allegedly carrying an illegal 4-inch butterfly knife, which he told police was for protection because “he walks the street a lot.”

Officers arrested Broadbent on suspicion of possessing the illegal knife and also took Rivers and Hensley into custody on suspicion of selling magazines without a permit.

Police later discovered Hensley was on parole for robbery and had an outstanding, no-bail warrant in San Jose. When Hensley also allegedly gave police a fake name, he was arrested on suspicion of false representation to an officer.

A fourth man — Brady Johnson, 27, of Los Angeles — was arrested the same day after a resident spotted him also knocking on home doors on Cumberland and Cleveland roads, police said.

Police discovered Johnson was on probation for grand theft, and had two outstanding warrants for allegedly driving without a valid license and failing to appear in court or pay a fine.

Johnson was taken into custody on the outstanding warrants.

Police reportedly found black gloves, a brown coat, black hat, pawn slip and two cell phones inside Johnson’s rental car.
