A woman was barely able to escape with her baby today after a man ordered her out of a car at knife point and stole it, leading Glendale police on a brief pursuit before being arrested.

[Udpated 2:32 p.m.: Glendale police now say it was a 16-year-old girl was ordered out of the passenger seat of the parked Nissan, and she managed to grab her 6-month-old niece before the man drove off.]

The carjacking occurred shortly before 1:40 p.m. in the 1700 block of West Glenoaks Boulevard and it was not immediately clear if the woman and the baby were harmed, Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.

The man, who was not immediately identified, allegedly approached the woman while she was in her white 1988 Nissan Quest , brandished a knife, grabbed her purse and ordered her out of the car, Lorenz said.

She was able to grab the baby before he took off, Lorenz added.

A bystander immediately called authorities and a police helicopter was able to track the man as patrol cars finally stopped him.
