The Glendale News-Press, Burbank Leader, Pasadena Sun and La Cañada Valley Sun took home 16 state-wide awards for their journalism over the past year.

The California Newspaper Publishers Assn. announced the awards at a conference in San Jose this weekend.

The 16 awards are nearly three times the number received last year, Editor Dan Evans said.

“That’s considerably superior than years past,” Evans said. “The Burbank Leader won first place for government coverage of bonuses paid by the city to employees, and the Glendale News-Press also won first place for government for its coverage of the allegations against ADI.”

Evans added that the newest member of the Time Community publications, the Pasadena Sun, took second place in the CNPA’s marquee category, which is general excellence.

“That’s a pretty big deal,” Evans said, “especially because the Pasadena Sun is not even a year old yet.

“It’s also pretty cool that the Burbank Leader and La Cañada Valley Sun for their websites.”

The Pasadena Sun took home a second-place award for its website.

Evans attributed the increase in awards to “an increased focus on transparency and good government issues on the part of the papers. That’s something our journalism peers value very highly.”

The newspapers built on strong work done in previous years, Evans said, as the papers continued to excel in their sports coverage, photography and design.

News of the awards brought a comment from Scott Pompe, vice president and general manager of Times Community News.

“With our continued focus on being the best local news providers in the communities we serve, we are so proud of the great and innovative journalism Dan’s team creates,” Pompe said. “It’s most rewarding to be acknowledged as one of the best by CNPA and our industry peers.”
