Woman allegedly crashes SUV into husband’s car

A 40-year-old Glendale woman was arrested Tuesday when she allegedly purposely crashed three times into the car of her estranged husband, who she claimed was stalking her, police said.

Alexandra Smothers was detained on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, which was her SUV, Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said. A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge released Smothers on her recognizance due an undisclosed medical condition, he added.

Police reported that Smothers told officers that she wanted to get the attention of her soon-to-be ex-husband so he would “stay the [expletive] away.”

She claimed that her estranged husband, whose name wasn’t released, was stalking her because she saw him Sunday standing outside her home in the 2700 block of Piedmont Avenue, Lorenz said. The couple was married in May 2010, but were no longer living together, he added.

So when Smothers allegedly saw him drive past her home about 12:40 p.m. on Tuesday, she decided to drive around and look for him in the neighborhood, Lorenz added.

When she didn’t immediately find him, she told police she reportedly drove back home, at which point she saw him in his black, four-door car.

The 51-year-old man, who resides in Burbank and Utah, reportedly smiled and waved as he drove past her 1996 Isuzu north on Pleasure Way.

That prompted her to yank her SUV to the left and crash into his driver’s side door, Lorenz said.

She then allegedly backed up twice into his car, and tried to repeat the action a fourth time, but was unsuccessful, Lorenz added.

The husband told police he was in the area because he had grown accustomed to taking the route, Lorenz said. He is a location manager, who often drives around in search of film locations, police said.

While he stayed at the scene of the crash and called Glendale police, Smothers drove to the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station, where she told officials she was being stalked, Lorenz said.

Smothers later told police she wanted to “prove to everyone that he does stalk her by coming to her house,” Lorenz said.

Smothers is due in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Dec. 28, Lorenz said.
