Suspicious object found on Glendale power pole determined to be safe

A bomb squad has rendered a pipe that was found to be “suspicious in nature” safe in North Glendale, officials said.

The PVC pipe, which was had a cap on one end and no cap on the other end, was attached with zip ties to a power pole near Bel Aire Drive and Thompson Avenue, which was closed off to passersby as a precaution, Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.

A supervisor with Glendale Water & Power didn’t recognize the device as something the utility uses, so Los Angeles County Sheriff’s bomb squad was notified to examine the pipe, he added.

The bomb squad sprayed high-pressured water on the pipe to determine whether it was safe, Lorenz said.

A website listed the pipe as a possible “geocaching” site. Geocaching is a treasure hunting game that requires players to use maps and GPS signals to navigate and find various locations.

While Lorenz couldn’t immediately confirm whether the pipe was linked to a geocaching site, he said placing any objects or items on a power pole is a misdemeanor.
