Greg Krikorian pulls papers in Glendale Unified school board race

Glendale Unified school board member Greg Krikorian recently pulled paperwork to keep his seat – meaning all incumbents will be seeking re-election in April.

Krikorian, who’s been a member of the school board for the past 11 years, recently ran for state Assembly in November and lost.

[Updated 3:30 p.m.: While others had suggested he run for City Council, Krikorian said he chose to continue his effort there on the school board.

“I’ve had a lot of encouragement to run for City Council,” he said, adding, “public education is at a crucial point.”

With two children in Glendale schools, Krikorian said he will focus his effort on maintaining class sizes against the backdrop of the potential for more than 100 teacher layoffs this spring.

“I want to try to stay away from increasing class sizes without hurting our students and our teachers,” he said.]

Fellow school board incumbents Christine Walters and Joylene Wagner are also running to keep their seats.

The only challenger to pull papers for the race so far is longtime resident Daniel Cabrera. A retired Glendale teacher, Cabrera ran unsuccessfully for a spot on the school board in 2011 when eight people were in the race for two open seats.

To declare official candidacy, those vying for a seat have until Jan. 24 to pull paperwork and submit 20 signatures to land on the April ballot.
