List of candidates in Glendale municipal election firms up
The pool of candidates in the Glendale City Council race has grown to 13 after two people filed the necessary 100 signatures in time to qualify for the April 2 ballot Tuesday afternoon.
Although the technical deadline was Thursday, it was extended by five days since an incumbent, Mayor Frank Quintero, is not running.
The candidates for three seats are: Aram Kazazian, Chahe Keuroghelian, Sam Engel, Jr., Jefferson Black, Zareh Sinanyan, Mike Mohill, Roland Kedikian, Edith Fuentes, Rick Barnes, Perlita M. del Rey, Herbert Molano and incumbents Ara Najarian and Laura Friedman.
The signatures must still be verified by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder.
The field for the city treasurer race — which also had until Tuesday to file nomination papers since incumbent Ron Borucki is not running — slimmed from a tentative batch of four who had expressed their intent to campaign.
The only candidate who filed the necessary signatures to run was Councilman Rafi Manoukian. Former Audit Commissioner Edward Azari, Civil Service Commissioner Vrej Greg Gregorian and personal investor Raffi Melkonian did not file their paperwork by the deadline.
However, if voters approve a measure that makes the city treasurer an appointed rather than elected position, Manoukian will not get to fill the open seat. The electorate has voted down the idea of appointing a city treasurer in 1943, 1972 and 1979, but this is the first time the issue will be on the ballot at the same time that the seat is up for election.
The Royal Canyon Property Owners Assn. is hosting the first City Council candidate forum from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Oakmont Country Club, 3100 Country Club Dr.
The list of candidates, meanwhile, for the two education-related races was settled last week.
Seven are running for three seats on the Glendale Unified school board, including incumbents Christine Walters, Joylene Wagner and Greg Krikorian. Daniel Cabrera and Jennifer Freemon — who both campaigned for seats and lost in 2011 — and Armina Gharpetian and Ali Sadri are running as challengers.
Glendale Community College trustees Ann Ransford, Armine Hacopian and Anita Quinonez Gabrielian will face no opposition after the three people who had pulled paperwork to run did not turn in their forms by the deadline.
