Permits OK’d for Mario Lopez’s Glendale home renovations
Roughly a month and a half ago, actor Mario Lopez pulled permits to renovate his historic Glendale home, a project that has languished since 2011, when city code enforcement caught a contractor doing revamp work that had not been approved by city officials.
Because Lopez, the host of “Extra,” owns a historic home with a Mills Act contract — which is an agreement with the city that reduces property taxes in exchange for preserving a historic property — he had to have his remodeling plans approved by the Historic Preservation Commission.
After getting a stop-work order, which was prompted by a neighbor’s complaint, the project came before the commission and was approved with some changes in 2011. However, it wasn’t until a month and a half ago that the renovation of the Kempton Road home became fully permitted.
The commission got an update on the remodeling of the 4,903-square-foot house, historically known as “Lorelei,” at a meeting this week.
In addition to pulling permits, Lopez’s representatives had to tweak the project, which includes, but is not limited to, extending a pool deck, replacing a bathroom, constructing a recreation room and adding a wet bar, senior planner Jay Platt told commissioners. The changes were required due to some zoning issues.
“The project is fully permitted and the work has already started,” Platt said. “It’s been kind of a long process, but it’s moving forward with all legal permits.”
Lisa Perkins, Lopez’s manager, said the television star would not comment on his renovation’s progress.
The Spanish Colonial Revival-style home was one of the first properties to be listed as a historic resource in Glendale in 1977. It was built in 1929 by Peter Damm, inventor of the armored car.
