Filming projects and photo shoots that took place at four Glendale schools last year brought in more than $10,600 for Glendale Unified and the district could receive thousands more this year for production work.

Glendale school officials recently extended the district’s contract with FilmL.A. Inc., a nonprofit organization that works with movie, television and commercial production companies to coordinate with property owners and secure filming locations and permits.

For the past few years, Glendale Unified has worked with the organization to line up schools that serve as backdrops for television shows, movies and photo shoots, providing the schools with welcome funds.

“It’s a great revenue source for the school sites,” said Alan Reising, administrator of facilities for Glendale Unified.

Under the extended agreement, the school district will charge production companies $3,000 for 15 hours of filming and $300 for four hours of still photography. A $1,500 daily parking fee covers all vehicles needed for a project.

Filming and photo shoots that took place at four Glendale schools last year generated $10,620 for the district. Out of those funds, the school sites that hosted the projects shared $3,000.

At Wilson Middle School last year, one production company parked in the school’s lot and filmed a commercial at a nearby Bank of America, Reising said.

A television documentary titled “Alien Encounters” was filmed at R.D. White Elementary, while Glendale High was used for a feature film titled “Super City” and a commercial for the Bratz fashion dolls, Reising added.

And a clothing company called Decathlon Sports took photographs of models at Cerritos Elementary to advertise its products.
