Residents looking to get out of the heat sought refuge Friday at one of two cooling centers, which are expected to remain open this weekend.

As temperatures reached the high 90s this week, city officials opened cooling facilities in the Adult Recreation Center and Sparr Heights Community Center for residents who don’t have anywhere to go to get out of muggy conditions. City workers provide ice water and TV access as well as board and card games for residents

The centers will remain open this weekend until 6 p.m. each day. Temperatures are expected to hover near the high 80s, according to weather forecasts.

City officials advise residents to stay out of the sun from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., limit their physical activity and drink plenty of water.
