Nominees sought for Jewels, Gem awards

Share

The nomination deadline for awards that honor outstanding women as well as students and veterans has been extended to 5 p.m. on Friday.

All of the awards are sponsored by the city of Glendale Commission on the Status of Women.

The Jewels of Glendale: Women of Courage Award recognizes outstanding local women who have, through strength, courage and persistence, overcome hardship whether it’s physical, financial or emotional.

Nominees must live, work, volunteer or study in Glendale.

Posthumous nominations will be considered, according to event organizers.

Nominations are also being accepted for the Gem of Glendale Award, which is a $1,000 scholarship presented to a local student — male or female — who is involved in community service that helps women or girls through areas such as homelessness, health, leadership or financial literacy.

And, for the first time, the commission is seeking nominations for the Gemstone of Glendale Award — a $1,000 scholarship awarded to a veteran, male or female — and can be used toward educational expenses, such as tuition, books or class materials. The veteran must be involved in community service that aligns with the commission’s goals.

The awards will be presented during the 10th annual Jewels of Glendale Awards luncheon on May 8 at the Oakmont Country Club.

Nomination packages can be found online at www.ci.glendale.ca.us/women. For more information, call (818) 548-2000 or email women@ci.glendale.ca.us.
